The vanguard of the crusade, the 502nd PIR were tasked with knocking out the enemy positions at St Martin de Varreville and securing Causeways 3 and 4 behind Utah Beach to allow the 4th Infantry to come ashore on D-Day.
 
As the 1st Battalion, 502nd troopers boarded their aircraft at RAF Membury in the evening of 5th June 1944, they knew their task would not be an easy one.
